Mandarin Curriculum

Thank you for your interest in our Mandarin courses. At Pacific Language Centre we use our unique and practical method to assist you in acquiring this new language. You will be amazed at how easy it is for you to be able to speak and understand Mandarin.

Beginner level one:

This module consists of 8 chapters. The objective of this module is to enable students to communicate in Mandarin using the most frequently used sentense structures in day to day situations. The main focus of this level is not vocabulary but rather the universal components of the language that will be essential for future studies. Students will be required to demonstrate the depth of their conceptual understanding of the uniqueness of Chinese language.

By the end of this module, students are expected to know 280 new Chinese words and to be able to handle daily conversations with a native speaker at a reasonable pace. This conversation will emphases the main components of the course; those being simple sentense structures, effective use of vocabularies, pronunciation, perfect grammar and tenses.

For students who are doing the additional reading and writing module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 50 Chinese characters.

This is probably the hardest module in the entire course and you will find Mandarin to be easier once you complete it.

This module is designed to be completed in approximately 18 hours of private sessions or 20 hours of group sessions. Exams will be given in the final class.

Beginner level two:

This module will building upon the concepts you have learnt in Beginner One. You will explore more advanced sentence structures, which will make your conversation sound more educated. Additional tenses will be introduced. The objective of this module is to enhance your listening and speaking skills. Multiple variations to express the same phrases will be taught.

Another chief objective is to enable students to handle basic logical sentences, sophisticated time related expressions (some are unique to Mandarin) and expressions to do with emotion, which will play a key role in your professional and personal life.

For students who are doing the additional reading and writing module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 120 Chinese characters.

This module is designed to be completed in approximately 20 hours of private sessions or 25 hours of group sessions. Exams will be given in the final lesson.

Beginner level three:

More sentence structures unique to Mandarin will be explored. With our unique teaching technique you will now enter the accelerating phase of your vocabulary absorption. A few slang terms will be introduced.

The chief objective of this module is to enable students to handle Mandarin conversation at a normal pace. To be able to respond to 99% of daily conversation enquiries without hesitation, be able to work in Mandarin speaking environment without relying on an interpreter and to be able to make phone calls with great ease and confidence.

For those who have completed this module, their Mandarin should be better than the average Hong Kong citizen in terms of grammar, understanding and pronunciation.

For students who are doing the additional reading and writing module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 300 Chinese characters and also be able to understand and give a brief summary on a simple article in Mandarin verbally.

This module is designed to be completed in approximately 20 hours of private sessions or 25 hours of group sessions. Exam will be given in the final lesson.

Intermediate level one:

Now you've covered the basics, you can now ask your colleague questions like, "What should I do under this circumstance?" However, you may not have enough vocabulary at your deposal to understand a Chinese movie or news report in Mandarin adequately without subtitle.

In this module, with our unorthodox language teaching method which will effectively enable you to understand news reports and even Mandarin movies. This module will take approximately 25 to 30 hours to complete.

Intermediate level two:

The module will focus on Group debate and discussions in Mandarin.

Students not only need to demonstrate their use of grammar, great varieties of phrases, vocabularies and slang, students must also need to be able to deliver a sound logical argument in a concise manner to win your case.

Students who pass this level will be awarded a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation to attend advanced Mandarin courses at universities in Beijing.

Duration of this level depends on the commitment of each individual student.

Advanced Mandarin :

In this module students are expected to have perfect grammar and able to speak fluently with sophisticated terms in Mandarin. Flaws will be identified during sophisticated discussion sessions. Special exercises will be used to address these flaws. Idioms, Chinese literature terms and unique cultural element will be discussed.

The time it takes to graduate depends on individual commitment. His/Her readiness will be judged during Mandarin discussion or debate.
