Cantonese
Curriculum
Thank
you for your interest in our Cantonese courses. At Pacific
Language Centre we will help you to awaken your language study
talents with our unique and practical method. You will be
amazed at how easy it is for you to be able to talk in Cantonese
and be able to understand a native Cantonese speaker.
Beginner
level one:
This
module consists of 8 chapters. The objective of this module
is to enable students to communicate in Cantonese at the widest
spectrum using most frequently used sentence structures in
our daily life. The quantity of vocabulary is not the main
focus, on the other hand, students are required to demonstrate
the depth of their conceptual understanding about the uniqueness
of Chinese language, which are the universal components will
become the essentials for further study.
By
the end of this module, students are expected to know 280
new Chinese vocabularies, to be able to handle daily essential
conversations with a native speaker at a reasonable pace,
with simple structures, with effective use of vocabularies,
sound pronunciation, with perfect grammar and tenses.
For
students who are doing the additional reading and writing
module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 50
Chinese characters.
This
is probably the hardest module in the entire course as you
will found Cantonese to be very easy once you get passed this
phase of study.
This module is designed to be completed in at least 18 hours
of private sessions or 20 hours of group sessions. Exams will
be given on the final session.

Beginner
level two:
Building
upon the essential concepts you've already acquired in Beginner
One, you will found everything to be a little bit easier.
You will explore more advanced sentence structures which will
make your conversation sounds more educated. Additional tenses
will be introduced. The objective of this module is to enhance
your listening and speaking skills. Multiple variations to
express the same phrases will be taught.
Another
chief objective is to enable students to handle basic logical
sentences, sophisticated time related expressions (some are
unique to Cantonese) and expressions to do with emotion, which
will play a key role in your professional and personal life.
For
students who are doing the additional reading and writing
module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 120
Chinese characters.
This module
is designed to be completed in at least 20 hours of private
sessions or 25 hours of group sessions. Exams will be given
on the final session.

Beginner
level three:
More
sentence structures unique to Cantonese will be explored.
With our unique teaching technique you will now enter the
accelerating phase of your vocabulary absorption. A few slang
terms will be taught.
The
chief objective is to enable students to handle Cantonese
conversation at a normal pace. To be able to respond to 99%
of daily conversation enquiries without hesitation, be able
to work in Cantonese speaking environment without relying
on a interpreter and be able to make phone calls with great
ease and confidence.
For
students who are doing the additional reading and writing
module, they must be able to read and write a minimum of 300
Chinese characters and also be able to understand and give
a brief summary on a simple article in Cantonese verbally.
This module
is designed to be completed in at least 20 hours of private
sessions or 25 hours of group sessions. Exam will be given
on the final session.

Intermediate
level one:
Now you've
already had the basics. You can now ask your colleague things
like, "What should I do under this circumstance?"
Yet, you do not have enough vocabulary at your deposal to
understand a Cantonese movie adequately without subtitle or
news report in Cantonese.
In this
module, only at Pacific Language Centre, you will be experiencing
the non conventional language study method which will effectively
enable you to understand news reports or even Cantonese movies
by the end of the module.
This module
approximately takes 25 to 30 hours to complete.

Intermediate
level two:
Group
debate and discussion in Cantonese is one of the core activities
of your Intermediate module two study at Pacific Language
Centre.
Students
not only need to demonstrate their use of grammar, great varieties
of phrases, vocabularies and slang, students must also need
to be able to deliver sound logical argument to win your case
in a concise manner.
Duration
of this level depends on the commitment of each individual
student.

Advanced
Cantonese:
Students
are expected to have perfect grammar and able to speak fluently
with sophisticated terms in Cantonese just like a native speaker.
Flaws will be identified during sophisticated discussion sessions.
Special exercises will be used to address these flaws. Idioms,
Chinese literature terms and unique cultural element will
be discussed.
The time
it takes to graduate depends on individual commitment. His/Her
readiness will be judged by the performance during Cantonese
discussion or debate.
